Memorial – The Creative Process / Berlin

memorial Memorial The Creative Process / BerlinI must admit, it’s been awhile since I’ve spun a Renee Heartfelt record however I was still very intrigued when I got the new record The Creative Proccess/Berlin from Memorial, which features ex-Renee Heartfelt singer/guitarist Peter Appleby. I imagine they knew what they were doing though when they sent me this record, as it very much feels like an extension of Appleby’s previous group with just a touch more melodic bombast to it that doesn’t go so far as to over do it, which is definitely a nice thing. I was a bit weary when looking at the album cover that it may divert a bit too much into some sort of pretentious post-rock territory for my liking, but those fears were wiped out once I got a chance to listen to it. The album looks fantastic though, coming in a nice gatefold sleeve with some pretty cool artwork I must say. I imagine those who pre-ordered it a few months ago found it to be worth the wait.

Originally the music contained on Memorial’s debut was supposed to come out as two 7 inches on Revelation Records. That obviously didn’t happen for whatever reason, but regardless serves as a good reference point as to what to expect from the band musically. It’s pretty obvious from even the first listen that this record would have been pretty much at home on the label about ten or fifteen years ago. I haven’t really kept up them in recent years, so maybe I am a bit off base on that. Fans of Quicksand, Farside, Elliott, and obviously Renee Heartfelt should definitely give the record a listen. One friend of mine went as far to say it reminded him of Seaweed at times, which I don’t completely see…but hey, why not? No matter what, this is a solid dose of melodic post-hardcore worth checking out.

Oh shit, I gotta check this out. I still totally love Renee Heartfelt’s first EP and listen to it often, but this track is better than anything off the Renee Heartfelt full-length in my opinion. I didn’t know this was out, either!
