Blunderbuss - Blunderbuss

It was almost exactly a year ago when I wrote about Blunderbuss putting out a new record, which is simply Self-Titled. Oddly enough just a few days ago I received the album in the mail from Escape Artist Records and they have taken on the task of reissuing it and giving it the proper release that it most definitely deserves. To say I am happy is an understatement because this was my second favorite album last year and knowing that it will probably find its way now into a few more CD players is just a great feeling for a record that I didn’t think many people would have a chance to hear. So yeah, when I got this it brought a big gigantic smile to my face. So with that I figured I would kind do the same thing on the blog and feature the album again since at the time when I originally wrote about it I wasn’t quite sure of the details and just where the album came from and since it just officially came out only a few days ago.

For those that haven’t been reading that long and aren’t familiar with the band, Blunderbuss were a noise-rock band that put out a few singles on various independent labels and an album titled Conspiracy on Homestead Records in 1995. Sadly the band kind of disappeared after that, however resurfaced last year with their original lineup of Ben Matthews (guitar & vocals), Jim Nemeth (bass), and Bill Baxter (drums) along with the addition of guitarist Jeff Ellsworth whom currently can also be found in Don Caballero.

It was so amazing to listen to the new record after listening to Conspiracy so many times before, because it was just like the band picked up where they left off and that all those years in between releases were nonexistent. On it they manage to keep in tradition with the ear piercing and dirty rock in the nineties, however they’ve noticeably evolved with a bit more melodicism, although that wasn’t that uncommon on their earlier material either, however the clarity of the recording here helps makes that aspect of their sound stand out that much more and it sounds outstanding. As with the original self-released version of this album, the artwork has been done by band member Ben Matthews. For more information on his artwork visit his website www.benmatthewsart.com. Anyway, do check out the music below as it's well worth it.

Blunderbuss – I am a Prayer [MP3]
Blunderbuss – Broughton’s Rules [MP3]

For those looking to pick this fine album up, then head on over here and to check out a couple more tunes from the album then head on over to the bands MySpace. Enjoy!
