Gnomes of Zurich...

This is sort of a make up post. I’ve gotten e-mails about throwing up some tunes from Gnomes of Zurich in the past and I never got around to it and then I lost all my e-mails in the move to a new host so it pretty much slipped my mind until today when I got and e-mail about Janitor Joe. So anyway, I figured for today/tonight’s update I would throw up all the singles I have from the band and some tracks from their AmRep full-length 33rd Degree Burns.

For those that aren’t familiar with the band, they were formed in ’94 after the sad and tragic demise of the great noise-rock trio Janitor Joe. Former members Joachim Breuer and Matt Entsminger teamed up with Scott Hull to form the band. They released some singles before recording their one and only full-length 33rd Degree Burns in 1996, which was released on Amphetamine Reptile. While the band was definitely in the same mold as Janitor Joe and pretty much anything on AmRep at that time, they were noticeably tamer in their sound, mixing in a bit more melody and bit less noise. Although, some of their singles before the album are a bit rougher and abrasive and actually I kind of prefer those over the album, although the album is still worth a listen for those that are fans of noise-rock. The band also did an interesting cover of the Psychedelic Furs song “Dumb Waiters” on a later single on Reptilian, possibly one of the cooler recordings they did in my opinion.

Where Poland Meets Africa 7’’:
Gnomes of Zurich – Where Poland Meets Africa [MP3]
Gnomes of Zurich – Staring Contest [MP3]

Dispenser 7’’:
Gnomes of Zurich – Dispenser [MP3]
Gnomes of Zurich – Nambla Fight Song [MP3]

Songs of Couch and Consultation 7’’:
Gnomes of Zurich – Will to Fail [MP3]
Gnomes of Zurich – Dumb Waiters [MP3]

33rd Degree Burns:
Gnomes of Zurich – John the Baptist [MP3]
Gnomes of Zurich – Killing an Arhat [MP3]

The bands album 33rd Degree Burns is still available through most online retailers. You can pick it up over at Amazon either used or new. Either way, definitely pick it up if the tunes above are to your liking. Enjoy!
