Ceremony – Disappear

ceremony Ceremony DisappearIt sure is great when one great band can split up and result in the formation of two other great bands. I am not saying I like it when a group that I greatly enjoy breaks up, but if it’s going to happen then this is the type of scenario in which I can only hope for. In this case it was the breakup of the amazing Skywave in which the members splintered off into A Place to Bury Strangers and Ceremony. I already wrote about the new A Place to Bury Strangers record earlier this year, now it’s time to take notice of Ceremony’s new record Disappear, which solely consists of both ex-Skywave members Paul Baker and John Fedowitz.

Ceremony continues forth with the sound that made Skywave such a distinct band, using an ample amount of distortion to their advantage. However, where as their previous bands sound was of almost of ear splitting proportions at times, Ceremony tones it down a tiny bit in favor of some new wave electronic elements along with making good use of a drum machine. The vocals play a big part in the duos sound, adding mightily to their already distant and darker natured persona. All of it is still buried underneath a solid layering of fuzz and when put all together it makes for some very fine noise-pop.

For those out there looking to pick up Disappear, head on over to Safranin Sound. One of the best shoegaze/noise-pop albums I’ve heard this year, easily. So do check it out.

    Hi Jonathan

Don’t know if you get a lot of comments like this, but I wanted to drop you a line to affirm that you’re doing good work with your blog, here. A lot of the time, I come to your blog, download something, and then forget about it, only to be listening to media player on shuffle and find myself saying, “Holy crap! What’s this?!?”

    And that’s a good thing.

Recent purchases I’ve made that can be directly attributed to your blog are Sto Cazzo! and the Chavez rtrospective, and I’ve also gone back and picked up Diablo Guapo/Sing the Troubled Beast and Loveless, just ’cause your blog has me listening to that kind of thing, and I loved those albums when they were new.

So, yeah, there are tons of bands that I’ve heard of from your blog that I won’t buy CDs from. But Bozart’s on the list, and Cruff in the Bedroom, and so forth, of bands whose albums I fully intend to pick up when the stars align with the disposable income just right.

So, thanks for the rock. Also, in case you’re wondering whether these downloads you get do in fact lead to purchases? Yes, sometimes they do.

    peace
    Matt

Damn you for mentioning Bastro. I’ve just been getting into Bitch Magnet again and it reminded me of an all-time-great mix-tape a friend gave me with Bastro, Bitch Magnet, Truman’s Water (and some Polvo, I think.) In fact, this kind of blog is no different from the mix-taping/tape-trading we used to do years ago, before the interweb made things so simple.

What there really needs to be is less of a barrier between downloading songs and purchasing albums. There have been a few bands posted here recently that I’d purchase straight away if I could download immeadiately in DRM-free mp3/ogg format. Having to pay a separate shipping charge for each CD I’m just going to rip, store on an external back-up drive, then forget about seems awfully wasteful.

If anyone can give me a heads up on a service that doesn’t require special software, doesn’t require subscription, doesn’t use DRM and supports indie bands and labels, I’d appreciate it.

Hey thanks Matt! It is good to hear that the Mp3’s posted do in fact lead to a purchase from time to time. Obviously I don’t expect people to like everything I post, however if it sparks some genuine interest in just a few bands for someone, like in your case, then I feel like this blog has accomplished something.
