I’m bored tonight and I have some time on my hands. Trust me; this is as shocking to me as to everyone out there too considering the little time I’ve had to work on the blog over the past two weeks. Anyway, I was sitting here listening to the album
Under and In by
Glifted and it occurred to me I hadn’t ever said anything about it on here before. I mean considering it contains Tim Lash of Hum fame, you’d think that it would have already appeared on here at some point or another. But nope, I’ve once again lazily cast it aside for some reason.
Anyway, Glifted is (was?) a side project from former
Hum guitarist Tim Lash and
Lovecup bassist T.J. Harrison. Their one and only album thus far, Under and In, came out in 2002 through the Martians Go Home label. I remember not fully being able to wrap my mind around this album whenever it first came out. It had the obligatory MBV comparisons due to the explosion of fuzz but it didn’t remind me much of that really. It made me feel woozier than that record ever did and there was the noticeable constant crushing thud of bass pumping to only add to the sickening tiltawhirl feeling that they induced. It’s a record that when I listen to it and all the sounds that are going on, it doesn’t seem like any of them should fit or be able to make such captivating pieces of music. I just seem to always forget how good and interesting Under and In really is. Anyway, check out the couple tunes below if you’re interested.

I don’t know if Glifted is still an active project for Lash and Harrison these days. I do know there is a
MySpace set up for them and it even includes a newer track on there that sounds pretty nifty. I’ve heard varying rumors over time that there has been a second album recorded and it’s sitting on a computer. But I’ve also heard varying rumors that it was scrapped, etc. I don’t know, but what I do know is that another Glifted album would certainly bring me plenty of joy.
For those interested in picking up Under and In, it is still available through
Parasol Records. I highly suggest picking it up if you dig the tunes posted above. Enjoy!
Labels: midwestern rock, shoegaze
I still love under and in, I think the pre-requisite was being a mbv fan though?
