Putiferio - Ateateate

Here is an album I probably should have written about a bit earlier this year but just didn’t necessarily get around to. I have no clue why, but that’s how I operate it seems. Anyway, I was talking to an online acquaintance a week or so ago that sparked my interest in listening to Ateateate by the Padova, Italy based band Putiferio. It’s out now currently on the solid Robot Radio Records label, who has also released excellent records by Dead Elephant and Hell Demonio this year as well. It’s hard to gauge where exactly Ateateate ranks among those, but I can easily say that it’s of the same caliber of quality.

Ateateate definitely reminds me of something that would feel perfectly at home on Skin Graft, as a lot of Putiferio’s music and style throughout the album seems to greatly indulge in some of that skronked out weirdness. The thirteen minute “Putiferio Goes to War” is more than enough warrant that sort of description, as it darts and jerks through electro based passages joined along with the noisy tortured whine of guitar fuzz. I guess this is par for the course for a band whose name when translated into English means “Ruckus”. That certainly couldn’t be any more of an appropriate moniker as far as I’m concerned. Aside from the thirteen minute explosion inserted within the middle of the album, everything else keeps it somewhat short but never that simple as Putiferio intends on filling every other song with as many jagged edges and unforeseeable twists as possible. For some this could easily be nauseating, but for this noise-rock fan it puts a big smile on my face.
