Knife the Symphony - Crawler
I must say that the self-titled EP that Knife the Symphony released in ‘07 was a good one and definitely showed promise for even better things to come, but their debut full-length Crawler that they put out just this year has exceeded my expectations by a long shot. The album is forty minutes of finely crafted post-hardcore filled with the sort of gripping rhythms that were the centerpiece of many great bands in the early to mid 90’s.I was in a record store the other day and as I was browsing through countless used CD’s I came across a Jawbox album that someone had foolishly sold off at some point. While I was flipping over it I noticed that there was a little piece of paper in the back of the case with some writing on it, so I picked it up and took a look as to what it said. I am guessing that the album was given to somebody to listen to years ago because it said something to the extent of “dear so and so, this album will leave your head spinning, signed so and so”. I thought that was kind of cool and while listening to Crawler it made me remember reading that. Knife the Symphony do an amazing job at tapping into that era where it seemed record after record could leave you doing just that, leaving you with your head spinning not having a clue as to what you just heard. However, you knew damn well you liked it. Knife the Symphony succeed heavily on Crawler by thriving on pure power and emotion. It’s moody melodic driven post-hardcore that anyone who considers themselves a fan of the genre will definitely want to investigate further.
