The Yoleus – Nightmare Vision Circle

yoleus The Yoleus Nightmare Vision CircleWith another year nearly in the books it’s time to start thinking about that dreaded staple year end list. Despite all the wonderful music I’ve had the pleasure to hearing this year I know there is always plenty out there that I have unfortunately miss or will inevitably run across much too late. That bothers me to some degree, but there isn’t a whole one can do about it. The album I am writing about for this update happened to come out late last year and is pretty much a textbook example of what I’m talking about.

It pains me more on this release especially because the St. Paul, MN based The Yoleus happens to feature former Sicbay guitarist Dave Erb and I am disappointed in myself for not being aware of them earlier. It’s better late than never though, right? The band also happens to feature former V9R9D bass player Jeremy Kuecker and former The Deaf drummer Jack Kalyuzhny. The Yoleus self-released their album Nightmare Vision Circle in the later portion of ’07 and is a fine dosage of Midwestern styled rhythm driven math-rock. In fact I’d say it’s one of the better and more captivating math-rock records that I’ve heard for quite awhile. Where other bands may lose focus The Yoleus know exactly when to turn it up a notch to suck the listener right back in to the twisting rhythms that they create. For nine songs the trio churns out groove after groove that I’d say falls somewhere between the area of Don Caballero and the vastly underrated Table. So if you’re into either of those or are just a fan of the genre in general, definitely give this record a listen.

The Yoleus – Rivets [MP3]

I couldn’t find a place that this is really for sale, but it appears for those that want a copy that hitting up the band on their MySpace should do the trick. So head on over there and buy a copy of it off them. Enjoy!
