The Grand Island – Naughty French Spot
Boston based The Grand Island released two albums and a couple of EP’s before calling it quits in the earlier part of this decade. The album Naughty French Spot, which I am posting about for today’s update, was their first album and was released in 1997 through the also Boston based Super 8 Records. In my opinion this is the best thing they did, however all their output is well worth seeking out and owning. Naughty French Spot is also readily available used on Amazon for pretty cheap, so it all works out.
Taking a lot of the trademark weirdness and experimentalism that found it’s way into a lot of Boston bands of the same period or earlier, The Grand Island blended it seamlessly with a bit of the Dischord DC “post” sound to create a nice jumbled mess of a sound. I mean that in the best way possible too, because around here anything that sounds like a mess is generally a good thing. Regardless, give this is a go if you’ve never heard it before.
The Grand Island – Big Blue [MP3]
The Grand Island – Buckler [MP3]
Those interested in picking up Naughty French Spot can do so still through Amazon. Like I said, it’s available used for pretty cheap, so definitely pick this up if you’re digging the tunes above. Enjoy!

Wow. Super*8 put these guys, Gooloo and The 914 together on a mini-tour and shoo’d them out the door the summer of 1998. I was lucky enough to see a few of those shows and all those cats just blew roofs off everywhere. One of my closest friends was on this tour-it was his first ‘real’ tour-needless to say our contingents were tickled pink about it and very proud him…so, boring story shortish, the one reason I had for going turned into multiple ones! Like I had been knocked up by Inspiration! They were all standout kids. And I’ve got standout memories.
Oh, and keep making good in this here blogosphere. Cheers.
