Boutros Bubba – National Anthems
It’s been a couple years since I’ve last checked in on Dutch noise-rockers Boutros Bubba. Last time I heard from them was with their ’06 EP Hearing Voicst In a Beer Commercial Makes Me Wanna Get Drunk. However, the band is back with their debut album and between the two year span since I last heard them they went and became a trio and released a 7 inch apparently. The single I unfortunately have not heard but if it’s anything like their recently released debut full-length album National Anthems, then I probably need to try and get a hold of that. National Anthems was co-released earlier this year through the Narrorminded/MOMI/Whosbrain labels and like their previous EP proves to be another successful venture into disharmonic noise/indie-rock.
Immediately I found myself enjoying the fuller sound as a trio. I liked them while they were a duo; however the extra kick these songs get with the addition of bass is really a difference maker. Some of National Anthems remind me of SWITCHiTTER and underrated greats White Tornado since I think a lot of Boutros Bubba’s sound makes its home in that same frenzied math oriented area of noise-rock. Check it out for yourself.
