The Gary – Chub
The Gary is a trio based out of Austin, Texas whom has just recently released their seven song debut EP titled Chub. While members of The Gary admittedly share an interest in the back catalogs of such labels as Touch & Go, Drag City, and Dischord I found that their sound is best described by the members themselves as “slop rock”. It’s something that seemingly fits and ultimately what they get when drawing from post-punk luminaries such as Husker Du, Mission of Burma, etc and allowing them to branch out into more spacious indie-rock territory. The Gary make good on displaying their range of musical ability without compromising the sort of dreariness in their sound that comes from not being able to escape those blistering hot evenings, even when the sun goes down and after a few dozen beers. The deadpan vocal delivery from singer/bassist Dave Norwood plays a significant role in this, adding to the sense of defeat. However, it’s the bands overall ability to be able to capture the slow moving and do nothingness aspects of these sort of days/evenings/nights that makes the EP something more than just what a few labels could to describe it.
