Persona – Dead Make-Up
I honestly don’t know why I neglect to check up on what BCore is putting out. Every time my memory is jogged and I venture over to their website they’ve always managed to put out at least three or four more records from bands I’ve never had the chance to hear before. Seems like something I should probably be paying more attention to, but for whatever reason fail to do so. Anyway, this time I was pleasantly surprised by taking a flier on one of their latest releases from the Zaragoza, Spain based Persona. Apparently Dead Make-Up is the bands third album and second for BCore. Like most of the bands that the label rosters they give plenty of nods to the wealth of 90’s indie-rock past in some way or another. Persona happens to touch upon several from listening to the twelve tracks that make up their latest album. While label descriptions are often hit or miss, I think they are pretty accurate here when sort of painting Persona as being able to successfully blend the earlier days of grunge with the artier side of the DC/Dischord sound. Plenty of moments where chunky guitars and walls of guitar are the prominent go to, however the band seems only content to stick with that only for so long before diving into something a little more off kilter. It’s definitely worth checking out.
