Hammer No More the Fingers – Looking For Bruce
Owe this one to a friend and reader of the blog, who recommended an EP from a couple years back by the Durham, NC based band Hammer No More the Fingers. A fine listen it was, at least enough to prompt me to do a bit of research on the band, which really amounts to me simply plugging the band name in the MySpace music search bar. But hey, I did it and to my discovery the band had just recently released their full-length debut Looking For Bruce on Churchkey Records. Going on the strength of the EP I pounced on that and thus far have been very satisfied with what I’ve heard. While I’d say that the band is very influenced by much of what crossed the airwaves on many of college indie-rock stations in the 90’s, they’ve managed to put together an album that doesn’t suffer from rehashed ideas. In fact, much of what Hammer No More the Fingers has come up with here is surprisingly more tuneful and catchy than probably much of what was heard then. The emphasis on catchiness and vocal harmonizing here is ridiculous at times and you almost have to fight to not have a smile on your face by the end of it. Well, maybe that’s just me…because I am told I often don’t smile enough. However Looking For Bruce and it’s persistent feel good pop hooks were enough to break more than a couple smiles from myself. It has a bit of an off the beaten path sort of vibe to it that vaguely reminds me of Dismemberment Plan with a bit of Midwestern melodic fullness to it. Very enjoyable.
