After reading through a list of influences on their MySpace that basically mirrored my record collection I figured I better check out The G and their recently released debut album Hold My Gold on Shdwply Records. Upon listening to it a handful of times now, I would have to say my money certainly didn’t go to waste. In fact, it bought me one of the coolest sounding albums I’ve had the pleasure of hearing all year. That’s not to say these are all sounds you haven’t heard before, however I think it’s rare that they’ve been mashed together in such a fine display of full on blasting guitar rock. In the liner notes they mention to play the album loud, and they certainly weren’t joking around because the louder it gets the better it sounds. There are parts throughout that remind me of Hum, Dinosaur Jr., and a number of older emo bands here that ends up creating a deliciously thick fuzz that in all of its rawness still has plenty of hooks hidden to go around. It gets me thinking that they would be quite a fun time to see live.

Definitely pick up Hold My Gold if you enjoy what you hear above. It’s available through the band on both CD and LP, although the LP is limited to 200 copies but they look fantastic with silkscreened covers if you decide to go that route. Enjoy!
