Mayor Daley – Facial Expressions LP
Honestly I don’t remember where I first came across Mayor Daley, I am guessing they were recommended to me awhile back and ever since then I’ve just been kind of been waiting for something to hear from them other than various clips around the web. Didn’t get in on any of the CD-R’s or cassettes they released, however saw they had just released this LP when browsing the Permanent Records site (ok, I was really there to get the re-pressed Mayyors EP since I dropped the ball originally). But yeah, I saw this too and snapped it up as everything I’ve heard from the band has been pretty great as far as weirdo/noise-rock material goes. Facial Expressions was released through Rotted Tooth Recordings, which is run by Kyle Reynolds drummer for the excellent Cacaw. The songs found here on the album are a bit more drawn out than anything that I’ve heard before, along with managing to get my skin crawling a little bit in the process. The music plays out almost as a horror sideshow soundtrack as guitars and drums both bang and clank their way through to create this menacing backdrop. Vocalists Kelly Carr and Dewayne Slightweight are left to chant and howl right along with it, which gets me feeling unsafe just sitting here at my desk. You know it’s going to get interesting when the vocals are really the only thing that you can consistently expect to be the same. Mayor Daley in the meantime will be running circles around in your head, or at the very least leave you changing your locks after it’s all said and done.
