New Brutalism – Actual Record LP

There isn’t much to say about the three men who make up New Brutalism. In fact, there is hardly anything at all. This is by design however and not because they aren’t interesting fellows…in fact they very well could be but they sure aren’t going to let anyone know. New Brutalism and the music the trio creates is the one and only focus and they plan to stick to that, so much that each song is not overshadowed by lengthy clever titles, but rather are just simply numbered. The only things that can be concluded by searching around the good old internet is that they are based out of Knoxville, TN and they make their own custom guitars, amps, and drums out of aluminum. Take a look at their page for some photos of that.
Actual Record is the bands latest offering, which have been far and few between over the span of 10 or so years. I saw information regarding the album pop up last year sometime and got excited by the prospect of new tunes from these guys; however in perfect fashion details about it remained scant all the way up until a few weeks ago when Actual Record suddenly became available. Quite a nice surprise for 2009, as I had almost completely forgot about the album by this time. For those that haven’t heard New Brutalism, well here is a good time to jump on board if you’re a fan of Big’N, Shellac, or Tar. They are waving the whole 90’s Chicago noise/math-rock flag furiously and create some of the finest sounding rock you’ll hear as a result of it. It’s incredibly tight, abrasive, and pretty rockin’. Do check it out.
