Built on a Weak Spot

Been awhile since I’ve stepped back and posted about some older material. What I have today is a split LP from the two very excellent and criminally overlooked Raleigh, North Carolina bands that were around in the early to mid-nineties, Regraped and Shiny Beast. I’ve seen this pop up a couple other places on the internet, but I got bored this weekend and decided to sit down and rip this. Gus over at The Dust Bowl does a fine job of summing both bands here and here so I won’t go into lengthy back stories on either, but in short Regraped were a mathy sort of band that featured two bassists and a drummer. Very cool stuff that is pretty unlike anything I’ve really ever heard since. And yeah, I am quite aware that there were and are currently plenty of other math-rock bands doing the two bass thing, but Regraped were a bit more aggressive and were just downright more interesting than many of the others that would come along. Shiny Beast was mostly an instrumental math-rock band, however they are completely instrumental as far as this split goes. They did occasionally feature the singing of Mike Carden though. Brian Walsby of Polvo fame also drummed for them. This here split that came out on Blast-O-Platter was pretty much the largest release that either of the bands would end up doing. Regraped also put out a cassette and a number of other compilation tracks. Shiny Beast had a 7 inch/EP on Boner, and of course a number of compilation tracks as well. Anyway, do check this out if you don’t already have it, especially if you’re a fan of math-rock, etc. It’s excellent stuff that never got out to the masses that should have heard it. So enjoy this nice high quality rip of this long out of print gem.
