Hot on the heels of their excellent debut Find Me a Drink Home that came out last year, 2009 has to be considered an even better year for Lansing, MI’s Cheap Girls. Why? Well they’ve followed that album up with two solid singles, one being a split with Failures’ Union, and have just recently released their second full-length My Roaring 20’s on the Paper & Plastick label. Those not familiar with the band will be treated with a healthy dose of punk tinged power-pop that brings to mind the likes of Dinosaur Jr., Superdrag, and a bit of that first Son Volt record. Singer Ian Graham’s vocals are far from perfect, but there is certainly something about the unique sound of them that really fits what the band is doing. Yeah, most of the melodies are definitely familiar and they aren’t really doing anything here that didn’t really show us on their debut, however it’s just too catchy to deny how good it really is despite how firmly rooted they seem to be in an era of music that has long since past. But really, Cheap Girls can continue to mine this territory for as long as they damn well please for all I care, as they seem to know it better than a good amount of bands out there currently.
